WEBTOON: Strategy as an Activity System.

The strongest insight came from connecting organization design, creator economics, personalized discovery, global distribution, and IP adaptation as a system of reinforcing activities rather than a checklist of frameworks.

My ownership inside the team project

My main areas were organizational structure, Five Forces, competitor/Blue Ocean/CSR analysis, company timeline, intra-firm value chain, and TMT/board matrix content. I presented slides 4–6 and did substantial citation reconciliation and deck QA.

Organization design had to support specialized execution

I characterized WEBTOON as a clan-leaning hybrid: centralized company-wide strategy paired with decentralized specialized execution across product, growth, creators, AI, IP, finance, and risk. The main design tension was preserving autonomy and trust without losing strategic coordination.

The creator–reader–IP flywheel

I mapped an intra-firm value chain that connected creator recruitment/monetization/retention, personalized discovery and reader data, global localization/distribution, and IP adaptation. The point was to show that these were not separate activities; they reinforced one another.

WEBTOON’s advantage as an activity system The strategic claim was the fit among activities—not that any single activity was unique by itself. WEBTOON as a reinforcing activity system. Creator supply, personalized discovery, global distribution, and IP adaptation strengthen one another; the strategic advantage comes from the fit among activities rather than one isolated capability.Adapted from my editable intra-firm value-chain artifact.

Competition made the activity system more important

The team’s Five Forces work concluded high substitutes, high rivalry, high buyer power, moderate entry threat, and low-to-moderate supplier power. In that environment, simply having digital comics was not enough. The harder strategic question was how WEBTOON could make creator supply, discovery, localization, and reusable IP economics reinforce one another faster than competitors could imitate the pieces.

Monetization and risk sat inside the same system

The broader team analysis identified paid conversion as a major near-term monetization issue alongside cost discipline, Kakao/substitutes, repeatable IP adaptation, and AI/copyright/content risk. Creator trust, reader conversion, and IP reuse cannot be optimized independently: a monetization move that damages creator supply or reader engagement can weaken the very flywheel it is supposed to monetize.

Broader recommendations are team-attributed unless they came from the sections I personally owned.
